What topics are going to be covered?

The main topics that are going to be covered in the beginners photography class are:

  • How to start - The first step is always the hardest. Before you even think about the lighting, there are certain factors that you need to address. Addressing those elements will help you to decide how to setup your light(s).

  • Qualities of light - To control highlight and shadow in your image, you must first control light. The two most common descriptors of light are "hard" and "soft". But what do they do?

  • Modification of light - Direction, diffusion and reflection are the three common ways to modify the light. But when and how should we use them?

  • Where to place the light - Relativity is a critical component of light. The distance to the subject, the falloff and the size of the light are all important factor that can change everything in our image.

  • The patterns - Paramount, Loop and Rembrandt lighting and how we can achieve them.

  • Low key and high key - The importance of light and shadow in photography and the fundamental characteristics of light.

  • How many lights - Using one, two and three lights to further the purpose. The advantages and disadvantages of each style.

  • Controlling the light  - Putting light where you want it and blocking it where you don't!

  • Finding your style - Lighting and post-production are often the two components of an image believed to dictate the style. However, since each photographer applies those techniques different to another, finding your style will lead you yo your lighting style.
